Physiological Control Loops
Feedback control in the human body, also known as homeostasis, is one of the main reasons why we can cope with a variety of changing environmental conditions and pathologies. At the IME we study these control loops and their interaction with medical devices from an engineering point of view that mainly focusses on dynamic systems and control.

Parameter and State Estimation
Precisely estimating parameters and states of physiological systems is hard - the underlying systems are not well understood, and there is a large number of physiological processes influencing each measurement.
At the IME, we therefore focus on the application of advanced, robust methods for parameter and state estimation to physiological systems. For more information, refer to the project page.
Autonomous Systems
Autonomous systems play an increasingly important role in the field of robotics. Their technical potential is expanding rapidly and practical implementation is now possible. Autonomous vehicles, for instance, bear great potential for safety, comfort and the environment.
At the IME, we therefore focus on algorithms for autonomous systems that guarantee safe and reliable operation based on rigorous methods for relevant applications. For more information, refer to the project page.
Ethics of Innovative Technologies
At the IME we are fully aware that technological developments bear societal implications that need to be assessed and evaluated cooperatively and in an interdisciplinary context. Be it in a bio-medical context or in autonomous systems in general - we take ethical engineering seriously.
At the IME, we therefore engage in research on how to best develop autonomous systems with society and for society, reflect our methods and present them in a concise and understandable way to foster mutual and transdisciplinary communication. For more information, refer to the project page.

If you are currently looking for a project for your bachelor's or master's thesis, please don't hesitate to contact us. IME offers a range of different topics in electrical engineering, control theory, signal processing and mathematical modelling and optimization, often with applications in biomedical engineering. In addition to that, there also is the Autonomous Systems branch that offers topics in the areas of autonomous vehicles, drones and boats as well as artificial intelligence.
